McMaster University Art Gallery Of Hamilton
Virtual Cities Online Exhibit

Virtual Cities is a web-based exhibition organized by McMaster University and the Art Gallery of Hamilton, and produced in conjunction with the Art Gallery of Hamilton's international exhibition titled Future Cities. Both Future Cities and Virtual Cities explore the multi-layered character of the contemporary city and how urban space can be used, examining such issues as urbanization, renewal and the idea of possible urban futures.

Comprised of three distinct sections - Interacticity, StillCity, and Synchronicity - Virtual Cities is participatory in nature and evolves over the course of the 6-month exhibition. Interacticity represents one of the interactive components of the Virtual Cities web site, and showcases winning Flash animations culled from an open call for submissions. Utilizing a map-based interface, StillCity is an interactive photography project comprised of images of Hamilton. The final section, Synchronicity, offers video documentation of various Future Cities art projects, as well as interviews with participating artists.
Interacticity
"InteractiCity" is an online exhibition of interactive toys created in Macromedia Flash. Open to new media artists from all around the world, the exhibit features interactive and time-based digital art. InteractiCity represents one of the interactive components of the "Virtual Cities" web site, and will showcase new winning entries every two weeks.
StillCity
How do you see the city of Hamilton? Do you depict a bleak industry driven cityscape or do you focus your lens on the natural beauty surrounding the city? It is up for you to decide what subject matter you chose to frame in the viewfinder and capture. "StillCity" is an online photography exhibition featuring images from the Hamilton community. There is an open call for local artists to submit photo based work throughout the spring and summer of 2004. Artists can submit a single photograph or a series of photos taken anywhere in the city. Selected artists will have their work displayed in an interactive web gallery.
Synchronicity
Synchronicity is the video documentation and presentation space of events that occur around the Future Cities exhibition, specifically involving artist interventions, installations and performances that occur in and around the Hamilton. A series of one-minute shorts is displayed in this section of the site. The shorts are changed periodically to showcase a variety of artists’ works. To accompany the exhibited works there is also interviews that allow the artist to further explain both their work that is being exhibited in the section but also to explain their work as a whole.
